Join the AIA Code Review Team

By Paul Karrer posted 03-19-2019 05:29 PM

We are seeking AIA members interested in participating in the AIA Code Review Team evaluating code change proposals during the International Code Council (ICC) model code development cycle. This includes members who are:

  • Current and former members of the AIA National Codes and Standards Committee;
  • Previous participants of the AIA Code Review Team during previous ICC code development cycles;
  • Contacts of the AIA Codes Advocacy Program who have expressed interest in model code development; and/or
  • Colleagues of members from the categories above who have recommended you as potentially interested participants.

This effort is vital to the AIA’s impact on the consensus process that will determine the technical content and scope of our nation’s model building codes, which will influence the state and local codes adopted in your community that affect your practice daily. Through the leadership of the AIA Codes and Standards Committee (C&S), we aim to proactively engage with AIA members openly and in pertinent issues as they arise to achieve the Institute’s vision to build and protect communities that promote health, safety and welfare. Your participation here supports the AIA’s position promoting regulations that assure the design and construction of safe, sustainable buildings and resilient communities.

The proposals to change these codes will be debated over 11 days (April 28 – May 8) at the ICC Group B Committee Action Hearings (CAH) in Albuquerque, NM. AIA staff and members of the C&S Committee will attend these hearings to support the AIA’s positions on these code change proposals.

Among the national model codes that will be debated and voted on during Group B in the 2019 calendar year are the 2021 editions of the:

  • International Building Code (IBC):
    • IBC-S: IBC Structural provisions (IBC Chapters 15 – 25)
  • International Residential Code (IRC):
    • IRC – B: IRC Building provisions (IRC Chapters 1 – 10)
    • IRC – E: IRC Energy provisions (IRC Chapter 11) to be heard by IECC – R code committee
  • International Existing Building Code (IEBC):
    • IEBC Non-structural provisions
    • IEBC – S: IEBC Structural provisions to be heard by the IBS – S code committee
  • International Energy Conservation Code (IECC):
    • IECC – C: IECC Commercial energy provisions
    • IECC – R/IRC – E: IECC Residential energy provisions and IRC Energy provisions (IRC Chapter 11)
  • International Green Construction Code (IgCC):
    • Administration provisions (IgCC Chapter 1)
    • Note: The technical provisions are based on the provisions of ASHRAE Standard 189.1 Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and will not be considered in Group B
  • Administrative (ADMIN):
    • Chapter 1 of all the 2021 I-Codes except the IECC, IgCC and IRC.
    • Also includes the update of currently referenced standards in all of the 2018 Codes, except the IgCC
