Letter from the Chair: September 2016

This year at the Convention in Philadelphia, we had an opportunity to meet some of our members in person and get feedback regarding the workshops and presentations that we gave.

In addition to all of the valuable technical content in the presentations, we tried to get the message out that a technically sound design is based on a solid understanding of Building Science and a Design Process that includes asking the right questions especially early in and making decisions based on reliable data. In this loop of “Question, Research, Resolve” that is played out many times throughout the design process, we are all in a perpetual state of inquiry. None of us begins a project with all of the knowledge required to develop a successful design and we are all trying to close gaps in our knowledge throughout our careers.

TDBP’s primary mission is to be a resource for AIA members and raise the bar regarding our Community’s understanding of Building Science Principals and how we can incorporate reliable data into our decision making to improve our Design Process. This is a fundamental aspect of our scope as architects and one of the primary ways that we can improve the Sustainability of the projects we deliver.

There were many sessions that highlighted exemplary creativity that exceeded elegant form and space, from COTE’s Top Ten and Top Ten for Students Award winners to Neri Oxman’s use of leading edge technology to solve important problems by setting goals and using their inventiveness as designers to find multi-pronged solutions. These kinds of successes require a robust knowledge of core principals, an ability to form the questions in new ways and great ingenuity to envision solutions that can be breathtaking.

In order to highlight an example of this innovation and study the problem-solving process and organizational structures that realize a profoundly successful project, we have just had our meeting of the TDBP/COTE Enclosure Deep Dive. We will be bringing the narrative to you and featuring updates on our website and future Techniques.
