From the President's Desk

By Omri Kenneth Webb IV AIA posted 01-18-2023 01:40 PM

As I look back on my career journey over the last 20-plus years, the opportunity to serve the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health as the 2023 President is a great privilege and honor. This organization has helped shape my passion and dedication for health care design starting from my time as a student and committee member involved in the STERIS HCD Student Design Charrette, working with local KC committees, and building a network of colleagues and close friends at industry events across the country. There are too many individuals to thank within the academy who have impacted my growth and success, but this drives my passion for giving back. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the Academy (AAH) this year.

Dedication

The success of the Academy has been built on the foundation of incredible past leadership who crafted a focused vision to disseminate and share our collective industry knowledge, improve the industry through networking opportunities, organize educational events, and provide mentorship for future generations of health care design professionals. I want to thank the members of the Academy committees, the Academy Board, Kirsten Waltz, Brenna Costello, and Ellen Taylor for their leadership efforts and setting the course of success. None of this would have been possible without your tireless dedication!

Our Sponsors

We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our long-term sponsors: STERIS Corporation for the HCD Student Design Charrette; McCarthy Building Companies for the SLS and the PDC Student Design Challenge; and MillerKnoll for the HCD scholarship that supports young professionals. The impact of your contributions has helped shape the careers of generations of health care designers, researchers, and clinicians, and expand the quality of education for our members and industry for decades.

Our Affiliations and the Pillars of Health care Architecture

None of this is possible without partners who continuously strive to enhance our impact on the industry.  The “pillars” of the AAH (networking and education), ACHA (certification), the FHER (research sponsorship), FGI (codes), the Center for Health Design (CHD) and the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD) support the mission, success, and organization of the ASHE PDC Summit (International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction), the Summer Leadership Summit (SLS) with the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA/the College), and the Healthcare Design Conference (HCD). These core educational events exemplify our mission of expanding knowledge, providing opportunities for mentoring the next generation of health care design professionals, and bringing together industry partners from around the world.

What’s Ahead

The last year included a realignment of our strategic plan from 2016, which focused on streamlining our committees, board liaison roles and a recommitment to the success of multiple long-term programs, sponsorships, and networking opportunities. There is an incredible opportunity this year to truly invigorate and infuse climate action and EDI into all our committees so that our priorities always focus on improving outcomes, health, and wellbeing for everyone. It is imperative that we continue to build upon the successes of our mentoring and educational programs and open doors for the future leaders of our profession. I am excited for what’s ahead in 2023 and look forward to working with each of you.

Cheers!
