Homeschooling, managing stress and our wellbeing

By Mayda V. Colon posted 06-12-2020 03:27 PM

Burnout, before the pandemic was something we were mildly aware of, unless it was ourselves who were stressed, tired, and wanted to give up. Then it is in the forefront of my mind like the song that gets stuck in my head, repeated like a mantra, over and over. The Washington Post’s article The coronavirus pandemic is pushing America into a mental health crisis suggests that during the pandemic we are seeing unprecedented increase of cases of mental health and emotional distress cases. This suggests that we are also in need of building our mental and emotional resilience more than ever.

But how? Today we are not only dealing with work stress but stress at home. What has usually been our wellbeing sanctuary is now becoming the core our stress. Homeschooling, an added and new responsibility is being placed on many parents unaccustomed of to that type of emotional stress. An article by Time 'I Just Can't Do This.' Some Overwhelmed Parents Are Opting to Abandon Pandemic Homeschooling says that many parents are opting to give it up entirely. And why not?! Some research suggests that acceptance may lower stress (Lindsay, Young, et. al.).

Many organizations realize the need parents have for help and are providing many resources to help us homeschool our children and even just keep them out of our hair. Let’s use help when we can and recognize that it’s ok to change or relax our expectations.
