In 2020, Ed Gauvreau, FAIA will chair the Architecture Practice Community of Interest (APCOI) for the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).  SAME unites public and private sector partners in engineering, design and construction to support our national security.  APCOI was founded in 2010 through the efforts of JJ Tang, FAIA, FSAME, who led the group in its formative years.  Paula Loomis, PhD, FAIA succeeded JJ as Chair, and David Packard, RA, FSAME is the outgoing chair.  For the past few years, Ed has served as SAME's liaison with AIA, building linkages between the organizations, so stepping up to chair is the next logical step.

SAME will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2020, with its annual convention in Washington, DC May 27-29.  APCOI has initiated a Design Awards program within SAME for built and unbuilt facilities that support our military services.  Program details will be announced after the holidays - Paula Loomis will be spearheading this effort.

Reaching out to graduate students at the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University, David Trevino, FAIA lectured on the topic of “Business Development – Marketing to the Public Sector”.  As a Public Architect that evaluates many Request for Qualifications, most architectural graduates are not aware of what is involved in marketing to the public sector. Differences in procurement processes for federal, state and municipal projects were discussed, as well as those for school districts and counties.  David covered Information that is typically requested in the RFQ, the evaluation and selection criteria, and noted the importance of clarity in the proposal.  A public architect’s major responsibility in managing public projects is the “public trust” – the fact that he/she has been entrusted with use of public funds. Public trust is “a great responsibility that should never be taken lightly. This is the greatest responsibility given to public architects.”

This was an enlightening presentation to both students and professors - so well received that a repeat presentation was requested for other universities in the near future.  Some students stated that they were not aware of this alternative profession as an architect and would seriously consider PA as a career.
