Letter from the Chair - February 2019

By Grace C. Lin AIA posted 02-13-2019 11:51 AM

It is an honor to serve as the Chair of the AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community (PDKC) for 2019, leading a Knowledge Community of about 10,000 members on developing and sharing knowledge around all forms of project delivery.

I want to give special acknowledgment to the 2019 AIA President William Bates, FAIA, for his leadership and support of the Project Delivery Knowledge Community Leadership Group. I give memorable recognition to the extraordinary leadership of our former Chair, Robert Bostwick, FAIA, and the contributions of the members of the PDKC Leadership Group who bring their energy and distinct talents to our work and their knowledge of the real-world environment and member needs.

It is a privilege to promote the architect’s leadership role in project delivery system through collaboration with the design and construction industry that will engender wealth of perspectives, foster innovation, and fortify commitment for continued improvements. This will help uphold the standards of professionalism and contribute to the advancement of the AIA and the profession of architecture.

As a design, construction, and sustainability professional, I have a strong commitment to serving my clients in delivering best-in-class projects by balancing cost, design, quality, and efficiency. I strive to incorporate superb customer service in overseeing the planning, design management, and construction development and create value. Project Delivery system impacts value creation. My commitment to continuous improvement incited me to join the AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community.

The agenda of the AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community is to reinforce the precepts that define the profession. Knowledge appropriately sourced and vetted increases the architect’s value to clients, practices, and communities. The priority is to advance the architect’s role and relevance as the central “content curator” for the profession.  Knowledge draws on partner organizations, other AIA Knowledge Communities, AIA CES Continuing Education system, Components and Industry Relations staff, and other sources of knowledge within and outside AIA to deliver value to the profession.

The AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community contributes to the AEC industry in a collaborative manner by offering programs and activities that are strategically connected to market demand and coordinated with academic institutions to support architects and design professionals in navigating changes in their roles and paths for career development.

To expand our Project Delivery dialogue and enhance our engagement with the AEC industry, the AIA PDKC will hold its 2nd annual Project Delivery Symposium on March 11-12 in the Board Room of the AIA National Headquarters in Washington, DC. We will have panel discussions and an open forum to illuminate the role of project delivery and help the design and construction industry overcome fragmentation, risks, inconsistent performance, and external competition by improving the approach to governance, people, process, product, and technology. We will have esteemed speakers and panelists to discuss the relevant issues, challenges, and progress in project delivery strategies. The purpose of the Symposium is to evoke resourceful, innovative, and effective project delivery approaches to implementing design and construction projects.  This Symposium will render invaluable leadership lessons and penetrating insights from Owners, Designers, Builders, and other professionals to advance project delivery.

On behalf of the AIA PDKC Leadership Group, I look forward to collaborating with the AEC industry leaders and members nationwide to develop knowledge that advances the profession and the collective work of the AIA.

Sincerely,

Grace Lin, AIA, PDKC Chair 2019
