Optimizing Team Collaboration

Well-managed collaboration is the cornerstone to successful projects, especially when Integrated Project Delivery, Multi-party Agreements, Design-Build, and BIM analysis are part of the project makeup. In this practicum, architects and project managers will gain new skills based on biological science and practical tools to build consensus in multi-disciplinary environments where competing objectives make clear choices difficult. Owner representatives can use these tools to foster collaboration and optimize the value they derive from consultants, builders, and the facilities they produce. Facilitators will present concepts, provide practical tools including checklists that can be taken away and reused in daily practice, and then concretize this knowledge through team decision making exercises in which participants will resolve complex issues through consensus.

Wastewater Treatment: Stewardship at the Center of the Salish Sea

Often removed from public view, large-scale infrastructure projects provide opportunity for unparalleled impact in improving the health and habitat of our local, regional, and international communities. The Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant’s project definition phase employed an innovative approach to large-scale infrastructure planning, incorporating effluent treatment beyond regulatory requirements. This session will highlight how the client led a rigorous and integrative process with a diverse multidisciplinary team, resulting in tertiary treatment; a suite of ecological restoration projects for Iona Island and its foreshore; and elevated opportunities to develop partnerships within the community, province, and country. Sonrisa Downtown: Mass Timber Affordable Housing in Sacramento

Sonrisa is the first project under Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-06-19 for Affordable Housing Development, which directs the development of affordable housing on excess State-owned sites and the pursuit of sustainable, innovative, and cost-effective construction methods. Sonrisa is a five-story Type IIIB building with 58 LIHTC-regulated affordable apartments, a majority of which are 270 square foot microunits. While there were many cost increases for implementing the novel CLT system, the immeasurable benefits of environmental sustainability paired with the exposed warm wood and significantly higher ceiling height made it an easy choice. Sonrisa is the first ground-up CLT project in Sacramento and was developed through a public-private partnership between the Capitol Area Community Development Corporation (CACDC) and CFY Development.

Achieving Design Excellence in Educational Design-Build Projects

Located on Chicago’s South Side, the Chicago Transit Authority’s 95th/Dan Ryan Intermodal Terminal Station modernization and expansion was the agency’s largest infrastructure improvement project to date. The project reconnects South Side communities to Chicago and the larger region and serves as an example of how a team of designers, constructors, a transit agency client, and neighborhood stakeholders can collaborate to deliver places of enduring quality that transform existing transit infrastructure for the next generation.
