With a focus on the evolving needs of Historic Structures Reports, AIA HRC members gathered to cover the history of HSRs, share best practices, discuss challenges and debate about future needs of this important planning tool.  At its best, the HSR can be a high-level planning report to document the historic buildings, aid in the scoping of future projects, and be updated as a living document. At its worst, it sits misunderstood and ignored on a shelf gathering dust.

An esteemed group of professionals, educators, and practitioners covered all topics of HSRs from their beginnings to inspiring case studies, to discussions of relevancy with the risk of climate change, and looking ahead in how to harness current and future technologies to be a useful, accessible document.

In addition to the good food and good conversation, the AIA HRC group was graciously hosted by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and learned about the current preservation planning underway at Taliesin West.  The weekend was capped off with an ethereal sunset “Evening Lights” tour of the site with anecdotes and access to the Wrights’ living quarters and apprentice learning spaces of this active architectural school.

Be sure to sign up for future AIA HRC Taliesin Colloquiums—a must do for every AIA architect.
