Who we are

The AIA Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP) serves as a resource for AIA members, the profession, and the public in the deployment of computer technology in the practice of architecture. TAP leaders monitor the development of computer technology and its impact on architecture practice and the entire building life cycle, including design, construction, facility management, and retirement or reuse.

The lack of software readily available to architects that provides automation for repetitive tasks and has intelligence is surprising.

There are a number of tasks that architects do on a daily basis that could easily be automated and there are other tasks where a database could save time and create less uncertainty.

For example.

WHAT IF the software worked out the Parking Plan?

As architects, we should be able to type in the name of the city and the software should do the rest.

WHAT IF the software provided easy access to comprehensive project data?

As architects, we should be able to easily access the historical data that went into the development of any particular part of the project. This would create more efficient workflows for the team and therefore save time and money.

I am interested and motivated to use technology so that young architects can be just as productive as architects that have years of experience. Having the appropriate and available software is an important part of that.

Some are starting to capture this market created by the relative void you've mentioned. For example, TestFit is a high profile company that has advertised their parking algorithms to save our time. I take the historical data you spoke of as something local governments possess. Probably less incentive there to make it accessible with just a few clicks for security concerns. However, UpCodes provides a pretty modern search and index style engine for people to go through building/fire codes fairly easily.
