White House Identifies Resilience Opportunities, Announces New Resources and Partnerships
Yesterday, the Obama administration released a report entitled “Resilience Opportunities” detailing concrete steps being taken by the federal government to increase the nation’s ability to absorb the impacts of climate change. The report emphasizes the need for forward-looking data and analysis to guide decision-making, as projections based on past conditions may no longer apply. To that end, the White House sees an opportunity to expand incentives and regulations to improve the resilience of buildings and other infrastructure. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit is also highlighted as a resource. This important tool was developed in order to help communities and professionals like architects understand and address climate impacts, with AIA providing the expertise on built environment issues.
Furthermore, the White House also announced a new initiative to ensure that the architects and design professionals of the future are prepared to design for a changing climate. The “Educators Commitment on Resilient Design” has been signed by 97 colleges, universities, and education providers who commit to developing course content on climate resilience. AIA assisted with outreach to stakeholders in this effort.
