The 21st Century School

The Maryland legislature approved $1.1 billion in funding for the revitalization of Baltimore city public schools, including the renovation or replacement of dozens of buildings. Construction on these projects is slated to begin in 2015. We look at best designs for the “21st century school,” and the creation of buildings that elevate learning while fostering a collaborative and technologically-driven environment. We’ll also look at the challenges to implementing these ideas in Baltimore. Guests: Midday contributor Klaus Philipsen, co-chair of the Urban Design Committee of the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects, president of ArchPlan Inc., and president and co-founder of D center; Paul Bradshaw, senior associate at the Calverton-based design firm Grimm & Parker, which has completed more than 180 public K-12 facilities in the last 10 years; and Larry Flynn, head of Facility Design and Construction for Baltimore City Schools.

Will they end up getting pushed out after paving the way for others? We examine that provocative question with urban architect KlausPhilipsen, president of ArchPlan Inc., and president and co-founder of D center, the Baltimore non-profit that promotes the field of design; Fred Lazarus, president of the Maryland Institute College of Art; and visual artist Stewart Watson, a Station North resident and the co-owner of Oliver Street Studios and Area 405.
