Hi Karen,
Thank you for your inquiry. The Board sets the strategic direction for the Academy, and directs its numerous initiatives. Our current initiatives are summarized in this chart:
Each board member is responsible for one of the "portfolios" shown on the top line (Communications, Education, etc.). The activities included within each portfolio are typically led by a committee chair, who is not a board member; in some cases the board member may provide the lead.
The Board holds 12 meetings a year – three in person in conjunction with the major healthcare conferences (reasonable travel expenses reimbursed), and nine by conference call.
At a recent Board meeting, during a strategic planning session, we asked Board members to talk about why they enjoy serving on the Board. These were the responses:
• Networking, relationships, comradery
• Giving back to the profession and younger generation
• Recognition, honor; comes with responsibility
• Ability influence the profession
• Opportunity to establish and build relationships with other organizations
• Being "in the know"
• Increase individual's ability to work on something that they are passionate about
• Able to access resources to make a change
• Surround myself with people smarter than me
• Provides credibility when we take info in national setting back to local projects with resources, contacts and knowledge to better the design and client.
I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me for additional information.
