There are free and at-cost sites that help automate posting to social media sites:

http://hootsuite.com/

http://twitterfeed.com/

http://www.facebook.com/RSS.Graffiti

Take a look at the sites. If you'd like to schedule a short program with Q and A with our Director of Social Media, let me know and I will schedule something.

I agree--these are great resources so that more time can be spent creating content rather than logging and deliverying it. However, there are limits to the number of networks posted to as well as additional costs for analytics.

Hi Kathleen
Another to add to your list is Posterous - which can cross post to blogs, facebook, linked in, twitter, and more all with a single email (including attachments such as images).

I have found this to be a very easy way to populate my on-line network with a single action.  In fact the biggest problem is if you make an error in a post, it takes a while to fix all the separate places the information ends up.

Hi all,

You may want to consider a service such as IFTTT (pronounced like "lift" without the L) for a number of reasons.

Posting the same exact content on all social networks is hardly incentive for someone to follow/friend you and may decrease your readership. IFTTT allows you, through simply formulas they call "recipes", to automate your online updates in a way that is specific to each network.

For example, you can create 2 new recipes that automate to 1) Facebook and 2) Twitter. The Twitter recipe will pull a snippet from your blog post and shrink it, shorten the url, and include a photo if available - all under 140 characters. Your Facebook recipe can have a bit more text, a larger photo, and won't shorten the URL (Facebook tends to think of shortened URLs as spam).

While you'll need to create a new recipe for each action (from blog to Facebook, blog to twitter, etc), you can also customize each action to fit the site where the post is heading.

It's still automation, just with a bit more thought and personality.

As an added bonus, you can also do fun things like get text messages in the morning if it will rain that day (syncs with weather.com) or even automatically welcome new Twitter followers.

For more info, you may want to skim my blog post: HOW TO: Put Your Firm's Social Media On Auto-Pilot

If you really just need a quick&dirty automation service, another one to put on your list is Dlvr.it

Both sites are FREE.
