Thresholds to the Hearth: Living With the Natural Environment

By Edward J. Cazayoux, FAIA

Excerpt

Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” My belief is that humankind’s psyche and soul are closely tied to the natural environment, and that relationship must be nurtured for a fruitful and holistic existence on this planet. Architecture can aid in providing this relationship.
