Bio

KLAUS PHILIPSEN, FAIA, LEED AP

Klaus Philipsen received a master's degree of architecture in Stuttgart, Germany in 1975. He has worked as an architect and planner in England, Germany and the US and since 1992 and was recently elevated to the College of fellows of the American institute of Architects. He is president of ArchPlan Inc., an architecture firm in downtown Baltimore specializing in community revitalization, building rehabilitation and adaptive re-use, historic preservation and transportation planning.

Mr. Philipsen was a member of the MD State Economic Growth, Resource Protection, and Planning Commission's Subcommittee on Planning Techniques for ten years, is a board member of the Thousand Friends of Maryland, was appointed to the Baltimore County Design Review Panel and is co-chair of the Urban Design Committee of the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects AIA). He had been appointed to the Transit Oriented Development Council under Governor Glendening, has worked on the Governor O’Malley Transition Team and was appointed to the Maryland Scenario Workgroup which researched alternative development scenarios for the State. Current transit consulting work includes planning of the future light rail Red Line in the Baltimore Region, especially the coordination of the land use and transit oriented development aspects of the Red Line, “greening the transit project” and organizing strong community participation. ArchPlan is also the lead architect for a large bus transit center in Langley Park, MD.

Mr. Philipsen has made many presentations on urban design, smart growth, sustainability preservation and the nexus between land use and transportation.

He is active in various nonprofit organizations devoted to design, smart growth and the environment. He is president and co-founder of D Center (a design center in Baltimore), Vice President of NeighborSpace, a urban land conservancy and Director at Thousand Friends of Maryland, a growth management group.

Mr. Philipsen is a resident of Baltimore County and is married to Nayna Philipsen, J.D., Ph.D., RN, Director of Program Development, Helene Fuld School of Nursing, Coppin University. The couple has six adult children.
