Bio

Annie Chu AIA, IIDA, is a principal of the award-winning firm CHU+GOODING Architects in Los Angeles, focusing on projects for arts & culture-related and higher education clients, including organizations such as MoCA, Hammer Museum, the Getty Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Southern California Public Radio. Annie received a Master of Science degree in Architecture & Building Design from Columbia University in 1989 and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI Arc) in 1983. She trained for 12 years with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in New York and Franklin D. Israel in Los Angeles. During those years of training she was engaged in architectural projects for a variety of clients here and abroad including collaborative projects with artists such as Mary Miss and Dan Graham. Annie also created an independent public art project with her husband and architect Rick Gooding and artist Perry Hoberman for Art on the Beach through Creative Time Inc., an NEA funded endeavor. She has developed with her firm a portfolio of architectural projects with design rich interiors including exhibition design and expertise in experience design as well as material and color use in the interior environment.

Annie has been a dedicated educator of architecture and design since 1990 in schools such as New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), Parsons School of Design, University of Texas at Austin, SCI-Arc, Art Center College of Design, Arizona State University, UCLA, and USC. She is currently Professor of Interior Architecture at Woodbury University’s School of Architecture. Annie was the 2010 chair of the National AIA Interior Architecture Committee and the AIA California Council Design Awards Committee; and continues to be active with knowledge production and dissemination as a member of the Interior Architecture Committee’s advisory group. Annie has also served on the board of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design as well as the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIA. During her tenure as board director of the AIA LA, she helped to launch the annual 2x8 architectural student competition. Annie served as an editorial board member of the AIA California Council journal arcCA (Architecture California) and contributed articles to the journal. Since 2010, Annie was appointed by the Mayor as a Cultural Affairs Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles and as a liaison and convener for the Mayors Design Advisory Panel. Annie also served as a juror for the 2012 Rome Prize in architecture, design and landscape design as well for the 2012 National AIA’s Institute Honor Awards for Architecture and the 25 Year Honor Award for Architecture.
