Bio

Gunnar graduated from Yale University in 1959 and has a Master’s in Mathematics and teaching from Brown University. He was a college preparatory Mathematics teacher for 16 years before he left teaching mathematics to help introduce the market to low consumption toilets in 1977. He introduced these products to the commercial and residential plumbing markets not so much to save water but to reduce the environmental impact of wastewater. His lobbying efforts contributed to the passing of plumbing codes and standards changes, eventually leading to the passing of a national code. He joined TOTO when they started up in 1991 after four years as their importer. As TOTO’s Water Efficiency Specialist he now represents TOTO USA on several Green Building related committees and is a charter director of the Alliance for Water Efficiency. Gunnar is TOTO’s designated liaison with AIA with regard to the Strategic Partnership. He is interested in merging Universal Design principles into sustainable design and has recently led a study trip/conference to Japan to examine the research being done at TOTO’s Universal Design Research Center as well visiting other related venues.
