Earn 1.0 AIA LU/HSW

On design-build projects, the owner enters into a contract with a design-builder who is obligated to design and construct the project. The design-builder then enters into contracts with architects and contractors, as needed. Design-build documents can be used on small to large projects.

This course will explore the unique features of the AIA’s updated design-build agreements and the key differences from the 2004 documents. Attendees will learn about the contractual relationships and liabilities set forth in these agreements and how to properly allocate risks and responsibilities in order to achieve a successful project.

Participants will understand the new issues and trends in design-build, and discuss business and practice implications to be considered by owners, design-builders, architects and contractors in order to fully understand their roles and responsibilities in projects that utilize the design-build delivery method.

Learning Objectives:

1.  Become familiar with the Design-Build family of AIA Contract Documents and identify the related best practices to learn how they will impact the public, project participants, and construction industry as a whole.
2.  Understand the contractual relationships between the various parties that define the responsibilities, authority and expectations of each in order to minimize confusion, misunderstandings and project delays.
3.  Discover how the architect’s duties during both design and construction differ from the traditional design-bid-build project.
4.  Understand the specialized general conditions associated with the Design-Build family of AIA Contract Documents.
