Best Practices for Design Build Projects
1.5 LU Hours
Thursday, October 9th, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Nationally, Design Build is growing as a project delivery method for both horizontal and vertical construction. To many owners, design build is the preferred method of project delivery for its ability to deliver innovative projects faster, at less cost, at higher quality, and with less litigation.  Research suggests design build is more cost effective, faster to market, and provides better value to owners.  With the maturing of integrated technologies of virtual design and construction (VDC), collaborative relationships such as design build will continue to grow as Owners look for better value in their projects.

Not every State has the same enabling legislation allowing the use of Design Build, and therefore it may be an unfamiliar project delivery method for many owners and designers in the State.  Not everyone is a fan of design-build project delivery. The reasons for disinterest in Design Build by owners, architects, engineers, and legislators vary but usually revolve around some form of misinformation or lack of information about contracting considerations and an understanding of design build best practices, and difficulties in overcoming legacy procurement systems.
A panel of nationally recognized experts in design build will engage the audience in a serious conversation that will include discussion of why owners choose design build, the different psychologies of architects and contractors, differences in contracting for design build services, and design build best practices, which when implemented will lead to successful design and profitable projects.

Architect Led Design-Build: Taking Control
1.5 LU Hours
Friday, October 10th, 9:00 am – 10:30 am

The complexity of our modern world has fostered specialization of all kinds. With specialization have come incomprehensible divisions of responsibility and consequent turf wars of risk avoidance. In the past, architects were generalists who managed and directed both the design and construction of buildings, but in reaction to the silo-ing of responsibility they have reduced their role and thus have become marginal players in the production of our environment. Architects need to reconnect to the process and take back control from conception to construction assuming oversight of all aspects of design.
