FGI Primer/ Healthcare 101

This is a primer on how to use the FGI Guidelines in the course of planning and design of healthcare facilities.  We will quickly review the background of the “Guidelines” and its raison d'être.  We will review the essential elements of the Guidelines, available formats and how to best go about retrieving information.  We will cover definitions of Acute, Ambulatory and Residential Care as well as other terms commonly used throughout the Guidelines.  In closing we will cover opportunities this year to participate in the next edition’s revision process.This presentation is a part of the ongoing AIA/AAH Healthcare 101 webinar series.

Speaker:
    Douglas Erickson is CEO of the Facility Guidelines Institute. He has more than 38 years of experience in health care facility planning, design, and construction and has served as deputy executive director of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering; director of planning, design and construction for the American Hospital Association; and director of engineering for the Joint Commission. He is currently chair of the Clinical Subcommittee of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170: Ventilation of Health Care Facilities. Mr. Erickson is a founding member of the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI), the not-for-profit organization responsible for producing the Guidelines for Design and Construction documents, whose mission is to produce consensus-based facility guidelines for the health care industry. He has had a leadership position with the Guidelines since 1985, been a committee member since 1978, and served as vice-chair or chair since 1987. He currently chairs the 2018 edition.

    Specializing in healthcare building for the last twenty-seven of the thirty-eight years he has been planning, designing, constructing, and operating hospital, research and university facilities, John Kreidich is the go-to resource for all hospital-related safety, infection control, sustainable building, and material/equipment procurement matters at McCarthy Building Company’s Central Healthcare Unit.

Kreidich joined McCarthy in 2000 to run operations of its branded “Compass” continuous work program – directing expert execution of high-risk acute-care renovations with streamlined business processes – saving clients time and money.
