Description

This session challenges our industry to design lighting for an improved environment of care. The presenters will showcase leading research in lighting and health, review the soon-to-be-published Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Recommended Practice in Lighting for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities, RP-29, and outline a bridge to incorporating research, technology, and standards to improve the patient experience from the owner’s perspective.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this webinar attendees will:

AIA/CES logo
  1. Recognize the impact of the spectrum and intensity of light resources on occupant wellness through explaining the basics of the visual and non-visual biological systems.
  2. Comprehend how these elements can be incorporated into design of the physical environment to improve sleep quality, improve visibility and reduce falls in healthcare settings.
  3. Employ concepts that suggest design solutions for mimicking natural rhythms of light spectrum and intensity.
  4. Demonstrate how new technology can be applied to design lighting solutions to improve occupant wellness.

Ideal audience

This webinar can support the design efforts of firms of all sizes and arms the audience with an advanced understanding of the lighting qualities that can be leveraged to craft nurturing lit environments. These concepts are applicable to nearly all program types and provide design context for the generalist and specialist alike.

Moderator

John Kreidich, AIA, CHC, LEED AP BD+C

For nearly half of his forty-plus year career, John Kreidich managed planning, design, and construction of healthcare facilities totaling over a half billion dollars (2015), including four years as AVP of medical facility operations. Currently the go-to resource for all hospital-related safety, infection control, sustainable building, and material/equipment procurement matters at McCarthy Building Company’s Central Healthcare Unit, Kreidich joined McCarthy in 2000 to direct operations of a continuous work program specializing in high-risk acute-care renovations.

Speakers

Edward Clark, LEED AP BD + C, Sustainable Designer

Ed Clark LEED AP BD+C is a Sustainable Designer that develops building- and district-scaled sustainable strategies, is instrumental in the national effort to create conventions of materials transparency in design, and is at the cutting-edge in the application of circadian lighting research in healthcare and workplace environments. Ed is among a group of ZGF architects and designers collaborating with academics and researchers to advance circadian lighting design and its application. He is instrumental to the creation of Lark Spectral Lighting, a circadian lighting design tool created by the University of Washington and ZGF Architects.

Karyn Gayle, MIES, EDAC, Vice President, Healthcare

Karyn Gayle is the Vice President of Healthcare at Acuity Brands Lighting, one of the world’s leading lighting, controls and daylighting manufacturers. With more than 16 years of experience in the lighting industry, she is keenly focused on understanding and improving the visual experience of those in the healthcare industry in a sustainable, energy-efficient manner. Karyn has conducted educational presentations, workshops, focus groups and in-depth seminars on lighting and controls design for healthcare facilities to thousands of participants across North America. She holds an MBA in international business and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University.

Mary Alcaraz, PE, LC, CEM, LEED BD + C, Senior Project Manager

Mary Alcaraz, PE, LC, CEM, LEED BD+C, Senior Project Manager at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, is a leader in power engineering and lighting systems for healthcare facilities. She has written numerous articles, won awards for lighting designs, and spoken internationally on healthcare, lighting and energy topics. She is currently a Board Member for the Designing Futures Foundation affiliated with CHAD and a Sub-Chair for the re-write of IES/ANSI RP-29 “Lighting for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities”. Recent Speaking Engagements include 2016 ASHE Planning Design and Construction, the Healthcare Design 2015 Conference and the 2014 ASHE Annual Technical Conference.

Mariana Figueiro, PH.D., FIES, Professor & Program Director

Mariana G. Figueiro, Ph.D., is Light and Health Program Director at the Lighting Research Center and Professor of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She conducts research on the effect of light on human health, circadian photobiology, and lighting for older adults. She is the author of more than 70 scientific articles in her field of research, along with the AARP-sponsored publication, Lighting the Way: a Key to Independence, which provides guidelines on lighting for older adults.
