Taliesin West

Since its inception as a formal discipline within architecture, historic preservation architects have strived to assess the social and cultural significance of the built environment. Why are the most admired urban places throughout the world ones that exhibit cultural development over decades, centuries and even millennia? Why have well-intentioned urban revitalization efforts failed to create communities valued by those who live in them? What do we know about social sustainability and the built environment?

“The greenest building is one that is already built.” For decades, historic preservation architects have contended that the value of existing structures is generally overlooked. Making buildings requires an enormous investment of material and energy resources. Even buildings with the highest standards of operational performance require decades to overcome the impacts of their construction. Demonstrating this requires the application of complicated full-building life-cycle assessment.

Schedule at a Glance: The program will open with an outdoor desert terrace reception followed by the keynote lecture and a lights tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West on Friday evening, October 9, 2015. The program continues with presentations by speakers on Saturday morning, October 11, 2015 and after lunch (included), attendees will meet in topical break-out sessions for discussion. Discussion groups will report back in assembly to close the day.
