  • 1.  Door to Suite in an Exit Vestibule

I've been challenged by our client to provide a sliding door to a physical therapy suite accessed from a vestibule that includes the exit discharge from a stair connecting 4 levels.  The code allows the suite door to be non-rated, but UL listed for smoke (UL 1784).  The client desires the sliding door to be part of a storefront to "showcase" the new PT suite.  I have searched for a system that is UL listed for smoke, while also being latched, securable, automatic closing, automatic opening by sensor, and comply with the 2000 NFPA 101 7.2.1.14 (forces to open/close) but have not found an acceptable product.  The closest product is the Besam ICU door with some of the electronic bells and whistles, but it is not the right application.

Any suggestions on a compliant manufacture is greatly appreciated.

I do not have an alternative sliding door manufacturer to recommend. However, you may want to consider using a won-door in tandem or in lieu of the sliding glass door. I believe won-doors are smoke rated.
