    Examine the philosophical dichotomy and conflict of romantic and pragmatic influences that can be seen in the undercurrent of architectural design as it relates to cultural context and regionalism.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Participants will learn how to Reflect on the underlying impact previous periods of architecture can have on fundamental present-day design decisions. Particularly ancient architecture.
    2. Participants will learn how to scrutinize the effect site specific conditions have on the built environment.
    3. Participants will learn about the fundamental design challenges facing custom residential projects.
    4. Participants will learn how to use microclimates, sun angles, views and topography to determine the overall massing and character of a house

    Report AIA Continuing Education

    Attendees will earn 1.0 LUs. A link to a survey will be provided both at the end of the webinar and in a follow-up email sent one hour after the end of the webinar. All attendees at each site submit one form: 1) page one: webinar survey and 2) page two: CES report form. The survey must be completed in order to receive credit. AIA members and IDP record holders will have their credit recorded within 5-7 business days of the webinar. All attendees will be prompted to download a certificate of completion at the end of the survey.

    Speakers

    Jon Dick, AIA - Jon Dick has been practicing architecture for over 30 years. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Idaho and a Masters of Architecture degree from Cornell University. Since 1996 he has owned and operated Archaeo Architects in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Previously, he practiced in New York and San Francisco working with several noted architects such as Steven Holl and Philip Johnson. In addition to over twenty AIA awards for residential design, his design acknowledgements include the International Trade Center in Osaka, Japan; a PA award for an adobe chapel in Nevada; and the winning entry in a national competition for a Native American Preparatory School. These and many other projects have been published in numerous books and magazines. Licensed in New Mexico, New York, Nevada and Texas, Jon's focus has been reinterpreting ancient vernacular architecture of the southwest within the contemporary built environment.
