A software program that will turn ACAD lines into wavy line work for presentations.

  • 1.  A software program that will turn ACAD lines into wavy line work for presentations.

We are looking for a program that will turn Acad lines into wavy line work for presentations. Squiggle 6 by SignatureCAD is a program that does this. However, the Acad drawing must be saved to Acad 2006 or earlier in order to work. Do you know of another program that does this where it works from acad2015 without having to save to an earlier version?

    Jim,

You may consider using Sketchup Pro.  It can import Acad lines (and 3d geometry) and then the built-in sketch styles can be applied or you can define your own.  After the sketch style is applied, you can export an image file to be used in your presentation.  The latest version of Sketchup pro should be able to directly import Acad 2015.

    Jim,

You have some ability to create "sketchy" effects within the current versions of ACAD and REVIT(Release 15). In Autocad it can be accessed through the View tab where you can select  Sketchy mode (among others) from the Visual Styles drop palette. System variables can then be used to control the degree of "jitter" (VSEDGEJITTER)and "end extension"(VSEDGELEX).  In REVIT you can access this feature for any view through the Properties menu  via the Graphic Display tab - Sketchy Lines. The controls in REVIT are a little more straightforward than they are in Autocad. I haven't taken the opportunity to use these tools so I don't know how effective they may be for you but they're there and it may be worthwhile to try them out. Hope that helps.

I have a similar problem. I'm looking for a program that will print my drawings directly on blueline paper, complete with the overwhelming ammonia smell.

Seriously, have you tried tracing freehand?

Try the "napkin" command in AutoCad. This creates a block overlay which does not effect your original drawing. Selection options plus degrees of waviness.

    Charles,

I do not think the comment about freehand tracing was called for.  That might work for a small plan, but when you are doing a large project like a 20,000 square foot house, drawing on trace is not the best option, and the undo command if you make a mistake is non existent.  And if you are proposing multiple options, the time involved can be significant to trace everything.  I appreciated the question and am interested in using the advice being given to give my plans a more hand drawn appearance when appropriate, with the speed and flexibility of the computer.  I will look forward to more advice on the subject.

And if I was one of the owners of your business, I would not appreciate an employee of mine making fun of another professional with a legitimate question about an efficient and fast solution to a problem that many of us have.  Not everyone is blessed with wonderful hand drawing skills, nor do we have the time to do it that way.  And I doubt that clients will want to pay for the extra time it would take to perform a manual task such as that if a computer could do it in a few clicks.

I hope that we will continue to receive advice on the subject from others who have found ways to provide a hand drawn appearance to CAD drawings.

What CAD or BIM product does not have this capability?  Most  I have seen do it rather easily.

I have a LSP command called 'Freehand' that works for ACAD 2015. Only drawback is that once you use the command,it permanently converts all the line work into new plines. So you have to be careful with it. It works pretty well.

I worked for a small firm in Mississippi from 1991 to 1993 that promoted itself to prospective clients as being fully computerized.  In other words, they were up-to-date with the latest technology, and did not need to produce documents by hand.  Needless to say, perhaps, this was not entirely true, as everyone had a desktop computer, but not everyone used their computer.  This was true of the lead designer/spec writer and the two project managers.  The lead designer wanted us to use a program that would create wavy lines from dwg files so clients would think the designs were evolving and revisions could still be made.  I did not then - nor do I now - understand why this perception of a drawing mattered.  I subsequently presented a design drawing with precisely plotted linework to a major client and began the review with a statement that the design could still be revised as the project was only in the Schematic Design phase; he replied that he understood and we proceeded.  For this reason, I would say it is not necessary to use software to plot a drawing so it will appear as though it were drawn by hand.

I have participated in entitlements hearings and design reviews in which it was absolutely essential to quickly and visually convey the idea that the design was evolving and malleable, that it was responsive to previous input and local culture and context and that it was drawn recently, informally and non-institutionally with minimal time and expense. The truth was that the design being presented was based on a prototype that had existed for some time and that had been produced for a large, national organization at considerable expense. Because the drawings appeared hand-drawn, the desired effect was achieved and approval was received. A simple LISP routine called "squiggle" was the tool used at the time (1997-ish).

I have also participated in presentations that were unsuccessful because the graphics were "too slick" (according to post-presentation feedback received). Perhaps a simple routine that could have turned our crisp, precise and information-laden drawings into something onto which the jury could have projected its own vision would have resulted in a different outcome (2005-ish).
