During December’s meeting, we had an interesting discussion about ‘data driven design.’ As a counterpoint, we have invited Jason Forney of Bruner/Cott & Associates to share a point of view on design driven by larger, and more permanent ideas. He will share two designs that were driven by the desire to reflect, strengthen and further the missions two higher education institutions. The first is a new gateway building for Hampshire College in Amherst, born from the College’s mission to “make positive change in the world.” As such, it’s designed to meet the Living Building Challenge, including net zero energy, net zero water and compliance with the challenge’s red list. Second, is a new College of Art & Design building in Cambridge, MA for Lesley University that solidifies that University’s commitment to educating creative, 21st century thinkers. Located in one of Cambridge’s major urban squares, it combines old and new architecture to make a ‘Nexus for the Arts’ for the University and its surrounding community.
