AIA CAE K12 Meeting // Terms of Engagement: Understanding Children's Roles in Design Participation
Mon, Sep 26, 2016 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Pacific Daylight Time
Please join us next Monday for a presentation by Rosie Parnell. We first met Rosie this past spring while touring the Erika Mann Elementary School in Berlin During our Spring Conference. Rosie had collaborated with Die Baupiloten architects on this wonderful project which, among other things, took the children's visions of dragons (!) as a point of departure for a major renovation of their school.
Drawing on a range of international examples, this presentation will frame a number of possible roles that children can play in the process of designing spaces. These roles will be critiqued in order to probe, question and better articulate the notion of a so-called ‘authentic’ participation. The talk aims to prompt reflection on practice while providing a language and critical basis from which to proactively design processes of participation and engagement for children and youth.
Rosie Parnell, PhD is a Reader in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at Northumbria University, Newcastle UK. Rosie is a founder member of PLAYCE – the international network for children’s architecture education.
