Meet Elizabeth Chu Richter, born in
Nanjing, China, raised in Hong Kong and Dallas Texas, Richter is CEO of
award winning firm Richter Architects. Named as the “Newsmaker of the
Year” by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in 2002, the newspaper
recognized that “… [Richter] has done award-winning work to educate the
public as to why architecture matters.” Elevated to College of Fellows
in 2005 and elected as President of the Texas Society of Architects in

Robert Ivy, FAIA AIA EVP/Chief Executive Officer Link: http://www.aia.org/practicing/AIAB098832 On April 19-21, in Lyon, France, AIA Continental Europe provided a rich offering of architectural inspiration that drew an audience of devotees, who gathered to enjoy each other’s company from as far afield as Hawaii and Istanbul. Francoise Vonier, who happens to be the wife of International regional director Thomas Vonier, FAIA, organized a Gallic tour and tour-de-force, allowing us to encounter several of the continent’s most substantive and enriching projects together with the architects responsible for them. These living classrooms (because that’s what they were) also counted for continuing education credit. President Mickey Jacob, FAIA, and I, racked them up.

College and high school students today are exposed to technology far more sophisticated than the computers that put man on the moon in 1961. In a few more years, they will join a workforce that is dominated by diverse parameters--one that is perhaps multi-generational, working in multiple geographies and time zones, and require skill sets for jobs that would only exist in the future. As more women also participate in the workforce, hopefully this will create shifts in their perceived roles in society that leads to a balanced leadership worldwide. It is important to encourage and re-discover ideas, designs, and technologies surrounding these parameters that are central to the built environment.
