2016%20ICC%20conference%20hearings%20logo.jpgFor those of you who followed us at the previous round of code hearings in Louisville this spring – here comes Part 2! The International Code Council (ICC) Group B Public Comment Hearings running October 19-25 in Kansas City will determine the technical content and scope of the 2018 editions of several I-codes, including the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and International Existing Building Code (IEBC). See the full list of codes here.

Construction cICC%20Codes%20Series.pngodes and standards adopted by state and local government agencies impact architectural practice every day. These regulations are heavily influenced by national model codes developed every three years through a consensus process involving building industry stakeholders. AIA member involvement in this process is critical to continue enhancing our nation’s model codes to reflect the design process and embody the AIA’s public policies.

The leadership of the AIA Codes and Standards (C&S) Committee aims to proactively engage members on pertinent issues as they arise to achieve the widest architect vision to build and protect communities that promote health, safety, and welfare. Such participation in support of AIA’s positions (see page 11) promotes development of regulations that assure the design and construction of safe, sustainable buildings and resilient communities.

Earlier this year, the AIA’s C&S Committee assembled a Code Review Team of almost two dozen members and staff from groups across the Institute to review and establish positions on almost 2.000 proposed changes. Included on the team were AIA’s Codes Network, Energy Leadership Group (ELG), Committee on the Environment (COTE), Technical Design and Building Performance (TDBP), and international components.

AIA members and national staff will participate in Kansas City all day, every day:

There are multiple ways to follow the action:

  • Via webcast on your computer, tablet, or phone from 9am to 11pm EDT (with breaks) each day.
  • View the hearing schedule and tentative hearing order (subject to change) and full PCH monograph of code changes.
  • Via cdpACCESS:
    • If you don’t have a MyICC account, create one and log in.
    • Real-time results on each item allow you to search for the code items you worked on or are interested in. Results are unofficial pending the final member action determined by the Online Governmental Consensus Vote (OGCV) this November.
