Letter from the Chair: May 2016

By Pamela Sams AIA posted 05-02-2016 12:54 PM

I have the honor of being the 2016 and 2017 Chair of TDBP. I wanted to send out a greeting and update our members on the current state of TDBP focus and activities.

At this moment in our profession, we are confronting the questions of “What is the relevance of our service for our clients?” and “What is the impact of our work for society?” TDBP members have a large part to play in this conversation.

Architects should be leaders in the application of technical design for building performance. We can leverage our expertise and our position as Leaders of the Design Team to be more focused on delivering projects that meet the goals that we set with our clients. If we can meet this challenge we will improve the quality of the service that we provide and create pathways to broader services and deeper partnerships. To meet this goal, we will have to convince many practicing architects and emerging professionals that sound knowledge of basic building science, technical design and data driven building performance is fundamental to the value of the architectural service.

For the architects that already understand the importance of this, we need to help them gain access to easy to use and relevant education/training that will strengthen their expertise and their ability to communicate the importance of our mission in a compelling way. To these two lofty ends, convincing and educating architects, we will aim high and use the most thoughtful project delivery processes, the most current technology and the most convincing stories.

We will be very easy to find at the Convention this year!

We will be at the “Find Your Community in Philly and Beyond” reception, members of our AG will be running two pre-convention workshops and co presenting with YAF at a learning session. See our webpage for specific information.

Are you interested in being involved?

See our list of Current Activities below. If you are interested in being involved in any of these activities or have a suggestion of what you think TDBP should be doing please email TDBP@aia.org.

TDBP/Cote Deep Dive Case Studies:

Create a technical how-to guide for professionals seeking to design high performance building envelopes, based on case-studies of top environmental award-winning buildings.

Commissioning Focus Group:

This group is working on creating a position statement on Building Commissioning for the AIA Board of Directors. The Statement is to define the Architect’s role in the Cx Process.

HP Definitions Project:

Creation of an online Glossary of Building related terms. The Definitions Project would initially focus on numerous terms that have been found to be the most challenging and to create an AIA Best Practice Guide or Standard. The Definitions Project Research Committee will work with researchers to identify how these terms are used by Design and Construction Professional Groups and Associations.

Technique Newsletters:

Technique is the semi-annual newsletter from the AIA Knowledge Community, Technical Design for Building Performance (TDBP). View the archives page to see past issues.

Best wishes for a brilliant 2016!

Sincerely,

Pamela Sams, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
