The precedent of new technology

For the courts architect who lives a double life as a tech geek, CT-01 Court technology was the perfect opener to the AAJ conference.  The biggest take away for me:  Holistic training is paramount for courts to evolve and embrace modern technology in its day to day operations.  Training and good operational procedures will ensure due process can be served while technology in the courts moves forward.

A tongue & cheek example of this point: a witness being integrated into a court trial process via Skype broadcast over live TV, as part of the George Zimmerman trial heavily covered by the media.  Aside from the poor AV quality of the transmission, the big mistake was in broadcasting the witness Skype username on television.  That mistake opened the door for people not involved in the trial to prank ping the witness Skype profile while on live TV.  The technology was not at fault as there were any opportunities to avoid the distraction from happening; it was the lack of staff training and operational procedures that caused the failure.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIKppHDJSJc

Another wonderful tidbit gleaned from the presentation: there are great courts AV research available online via the AIA/Infocomm collaboration and from other trailblazers.  Here are two great links to get started with:
