Valuing Connectivity: Exploring the Importance of Civic Inclusion and Walkability for Senior Living
By Dodd Kattman, AIA

As the Baby Boomers approach retirement, they will be less tolerant than any generation before them of accepting a lifestyle removed from the community–at–large. This phenomena will encourage CCRC's to explore how their residents can remain an integral part of the community—resulting in the realization that site selection may be one of the most important decisions a CCRC will ever make in exploring how they can provide environments that support aging–in–place.  Read the white paper.

Who owns CAD files?
Asked by David Wulff, AIA

Recently I have had requests for CAD files from clients and other 3rd parties. The latest is from a shopping center where I did a build-out for a restaurant. They claim that providing CAD files is required as part of the tennants lease. I never heard of this before and am reluctant to provide CAD files. I gave them pdf files, but they insist on CAD files. I remember the day when drawings were done by hand. Would they have requested the actual drawings? I usually tell them that my insurance carrier me not to provide CAD files because of the liability. Balance for Historic Religious Structures
By Craig Rafferty, FAIA

There are many areas of overlap between the AIA's Historic Resources Knowledge Community and the AIA's Interfaith Forum on Religion Art and Architecture (IFRAA) Knowledge Community. One of the most significant is their common ground for preserving and restoring historic churches and sharing information on successful projects. Such projects are often worthy of recognition within the Faith and Form / IFRAA International Awards program conducted each year in search of the most meaningful and exemplary religious architecture projects. This award program, approaching 70 years under 3 different names, has recognized over 80 restorations and major renovation projects in the past 45 years in which records are available. Read more.

Defining the Value of Human Resources
By Barbara Irwin

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my career at an engineering/architectural firm, Human Resources professionals were paper pushers. Today, thanks to a series of advancements in corporate culture, federal and state laws, and liability protections, many firms now view HR as a strategic partner in business operations.  Read the full article.  From the Practice Management Digest Summer issue.  View the PM Digest archives.

Human Resources: Creating the right workforce for your future
Audience questions answered by Sandy Blaha

Q:  What insight do you have regarding assessing TALENT versus assessing POTENTIAL??  Talent speaks for itself, whereas potential often lies latent within prospects. [Desmond Grimball]

A:  That is an excellent question.  I have a lot of knowledge of various ways to assess talent. It is a dis-service to not assess your talent pool. Assessment is a great opening to self-awareness and begins the discussion that is often on the minds of professionals…my career potential/pathway.
