InHouse OutHouse Team Receives AIA Innovation and Practice in House Design Research Grant

The AIA Small Project Practitioners and the AIA Housing Knowledge Community are proud to announce Jason Fleming, Assoc. AIA, Peter Muessig, Assoc. AIA, and Andrew Daley, Assoc. AIA, as recipients of the 2012 AIA Innovation and Practice in House Design Research Grant for their project InHouse OutHouse.

"[All of] the 2012 submissions were innovative indeed. From potentially revolutionary to substantially transformational, the entries birthed grand ideas dreamed of in the minds of students and former students to the challenging reality of professional practice," commented juror R. Denise Everson, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP.

The InHouse OutHouse, submitted by three colleagues from Rice University, quickly rose to the top of the pile and created a sense of unity among the jury. The idea is to create a prefabricated “core” containing central services of a home such as kitchen, bath, HVAC, etc. off-site where manufacturing can be controlled. Once inserted, the InHouse OutHouse acts as the "guts" of the house, and can be used in existing homes or used in new construction.  Whether deployed in Houston, Los Angeles, or any other American city or town, the InHouse OutHouse will allow communities to retain their character while being infused with modern conveniences. Human Resources: Creating the right workforce for your future

Do you have the right team in place to ensure a successful future for your firm? Creating a great team is not an accident but a deliberate intention executed with discipline. We all know the cost when we hire the wrong people—the time and money invested and lost—but you also lose opportunities, reputation and experience significant gaps in project performance.  Sandy Blaha presented this webinar on June 28th.  Download the webinars resources: PDF Handout | YouTube | Human Resources Workbook.  Learn more about the Practice Management Knowledge Community.

Healthcare Facility Guidelines Institute Public Comment Period
From the Academy of Architecture for Health Knowledge Community

The Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) opened the public comment period (June 1 through Nov. 25) on proposed changes for the 2014 edition of the FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care. Rebecca Lewis & Scott Miller - AAH Liaisons to the Guidelines Revision Committee - urge all AIA members to become fully engaged in this comment/review process. The review process should focus on proposed changes that may go above and beyond the minimal design standards and do they pose operational mandates beyond the intention of the Guidelines. Participation in this process by all in the health design field is needed. The Guidelines is used as the codes in over 42 states around the country. The draft 2014 Guidelines is available for review in electronic form on the FGI website.

RE: Right to Plan Usage
Posted by S. Jones, AIA

This is totally theoretical - but if a firm is working on a project and bring it through to DD's and for what ever reason the client stops the project then restarts it with another firm does the client have the right to use the DD's and to give to the new firm and let them use them to continue the project?

Or - in another scenario - they decide to move or duplicate the project to another city and/or site - can they use the DD that the original firm produces for them?  Join the conversation.

RE: Appraisal Reform - #1 Agenda for Architects
Posted by Eric Rawlings, AIA

Custom Residences are very difficult to build, especially in today's economic climate. It's hard enough to find people willing to spend more on a custom residence and even harder to find a bank willing to lend them money. I don't know if any of you have noticed how low appraisals are coming in these days, but I know for a fact sales have steadily gone up over the last few years in my area, yet this year appraisals are coming in suspiciously lower.  Join the discussion
