Net Positive Realities

Net Zero energy still seems like a faraway place to many as we grapple with definitions, discover (or rediscover) better ways to design to lowest energy use, how well on site solar and wind work, and what energy storage options are available.  But as they say, you will not get to a really new place by doing the same things that got you where you are now.  Most building owners have an opportunity now to generate at least solar power from their building roofs and from solar canopies over parking.  In some cases they have wind options or façade solar options as well.  As we decentralize the source of our power supplies those who miss out on the income from generating power and using it and selling it to the grid will be at a financial disadvantage to owners who have stepped up and made the opportunity real.  Buildings and parking areas that generate power will have better bottom lines and greater property values.  Communities that can reduce or eliminate day time and even night time operation of their power plants will have better air quality ratings and better green rankings so will benefit through attracting new businesses and people to their communities.  When we look at new designs or existing facilities it is time to start envisioning how much income we are missing by not generating as much energy as possible on our buildings and over our parking garages and lots.  The fact is, the shading action of solar panels can also keep direct solar heat off our roofs, paving, and cars and that helps prolong assets and keep buildings cooler so they use less energy.  It is time to make Net Positive our default whether we get there or not on any single project.  Energy should be the first thing we think of when an owner says the word “project”.  As I look down on communities when flying all I see are missed opportunities of literally countless roofs and parking areas generating no power income yet baking in the sun on countless days.  There is no reason to miss this huge opportunity any longer.  And envisioning it for every project will help us all tackle the aesthetic language and practical challenges we may still need to master.
