AIA helped cosponsor the P3 Summit on Infrastructure & Public-Private Partnerships with Governing Magazine that took place on May 12th in Santa Monica. The event brought together over 100 people from all across the country including experts from the public and private sectors to examine the risks and challenges as well as the benefits of Public-Private Partnerships (P3) as a financing tool.

Throughout the day we heard from public sector leaders who have implemented P3s helping to shed light on some of the complexities such as the importance of an accurate risk assessment and proper accounting of life cycle costs. Representing the architecture profession and AIA on the Investing in the Future: Empowering Performance-Based, Sustainable Infrastructure Projects for Smart Cities panel were Clifford Ham and Courtney Crosson (pictured below from left to right).

Courtney, an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona School of Architecture discussed the net zero water and energy design of the new Santa Monica City Hall that she worked on as a sustainability consultant for BuroHappold Engineering. Clifford, the Architectural Program Lead for the Judicial Council of California Capital Program Office discussed lessons learned as the Project Manager for the development of the first P3 social infrastructure project in the United States, the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach California.

The successful one day conference concluded with public sector participants hopefully walking away with new insight into P3s and connections to experts who can help them optimize the value of P3s as well as navigate the very often complex multidimensional deals.
