Action Needed to Save Federal 2030 Targets

After a false start earlier this year, the U.S. Senate is poised for a final vote as soon as today on S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act. Now we need your help to save sustainability in federal design.

This legislation would repeal the current mandate to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in new and majorly renovated federal buildings by the year 2030. The 2030 targets are a cornerstone of the federal government’s sustainability efforts, committing federal facilities to meeting the terms of the 2030 Challenge in which many leading architecture firms are participating. Although the legislation takes a small step forward with some modest improvements to energy efficiency policy, the repeal of the 2030 targets is a great leap back.

As leaders in sustainability, architects have worked tirelessly to develop and implement targets for the reduction of fossil fuel use in buildings. Now, the federal government’s leadership role in this vital mission remains at risk.

Take action now – tell your Senators that you believe in the power of sustainable design to meet the challenge of reducing carbon emissions from buildings. Urge them to oppose the Energy Policy Modernization Act due to its repeal of the 2030 targets for federal buildings.
