Challenging the Status Quo
November 18-21, 2015 | Conrad Miami Hotel – Miami
Announcements and Deadlines
12/29 See you next year in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 2-5, 2016.
Against a backdrop of falling crime rates since 1993, we are at the beginning of an important era where the diverse political ideologies appear to be coalescing with a unified voice. Momentum is building for a justice system that seeks alternatives to mass incarceration. Public opinion and debate is focusing on a myriad of issues that may impact the future of the criminal justice system: Capital punishment, immigration, legalizing marijuana, police/community relations, returning Veterans, mental health, and victims’ rights, to name a few.
This year’s Academy of Architecture for Justice Conference focuses on the future of justice. We are calling on planners and design professionals to challenge the status quo. We will reflect on the current justice system with all of its depth and complexity. We will bring stakeholders from all of the justice partners together to discuss their experiences with justice projects around the globe. You will learn how your colleagues' design and planning solutions respond to and shape the future of justice in a real way.
New This Year
Restorative Justice Visioning Event
The Sustainable Justice Committee (SJC) has developed a conference-wide event to demonstrate an innovative visioning approach to engaging key stakeholders to determine project objectives that best serve the community's long-term sustainability and resiliency. The event begins Friday morning and will be held as track sessions. There will also be a Part 3 on Saturday morning. Learn more.
More Opportunities for Emerging Professionals
As an extension of the AIA’s repositioning initiative to engage emerging professionals, the committee has sought to: select a forward focused theme and keynote speakers, provide speaking opportunities in current presentations and keynotes, provide financial incentives for both individuals and the firms to make travel feasible, increase interactivity during and outside of sessions, and coordinate special networking events for new attendee engagement. In fact, we believe these enhancements will benefit all attendees and welcome your feedback.
New Round Table Format
Past attendees have highly praised the opportunities to discuss hot topics in small groups. We have added three round tables to the conference program. See the Schedule at a Glance for details.
The Future of Justice
As inspiration for the 2015 AAJ Conference in Miami, let's reflect on the current justice system and question the status quo. If we could get all of the stakeholders together from all of the justice partners and change the system together, what might it look like? Read the paper online now »
