Bio
Linda Keane, AIA, NCARB, ACSA, Professor of Architecture and Environmental Design, teaches in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As an architect and artist she combines teaching, research and practice with architecture, animation and urbanism. A leader in design education, she lectures about the importance of design education and changing educational practices for the new design economy: Architecture Process Through Animation; Complex Interiority; Interiority Complex; The Culture of Design Education; The Aesthetics of Sustainability and the Ethical Imagination; Eco Literacy: Greening Public Imagination. As Chair of the Department (1985-90, 1998-2003) and the Design Initiative she championed design practices in an art school leading development of a third graduate program in architecture in Chicago. Co-creator and director of www.NEXT.cc, a K12 art + design + environment eco web community, she conducts teacher workshops introducing what design is, what design does and why it is important to society. Co-founder of STUDIO 1032, she works on green initiatives along the Milwaukee- Chicago corridor including the City of Chicago Green Roof Website and mixed –use, mixed income conservation communities. STUDIO 1032 also produces films about architecture, which are shown internationally. The films, awarded a PBS Emmy, are included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and J. Paul Getty Program for Art on Film, Architecture On Screen, A+A Architecturanimacion, and ARCHITECTURE: An Interactive Introduction. Her work has been supported and recognized by the American Institute of Architects, American Architectural Foundation, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and National Endowment for the Arts, National Institute for Architecture Education (Van Alen Institute), the Graham Foundation and the United States Green Building Council. Her honors include an AIA School Medal, an AIC Chairman’s Award, Presidential Urban Engagement Award, AIA/ACSA Research Awards, American Architectural Foundation Merit Awards, United States Green Building Council Excellence in Green Building Education Award, National Endowment of the Arts Design Education Awards, Fulbright to Turkey, a CAP Distinguished Alumnus Award and American Institute of Architecture Gold Medal Honor Award for Design Education.
