Retail is all about the bottom line. Yet major companies in the retail sector have committed themselves to sustainable practices, from energy conservation to supply chain management, in their efforts to be both environmentally responsible and profitable. Find out the how and whys of what's behind these efforts, and how you can present sustainable strategies to others based on bottom line value as well as social responsibility. Michael Hoover, AIA is a Senior Associate with SGA Design Group. Michael graduated from the University of Oklahoma and joined SGA in 2006. He has over 18 years of retail experience in architecture. Michael is a licensed architect, a LEED Accredited Professional with BD+C specialty, a member of the American Institute of Architects and is an ICC certified Accessibility Inspector / Plans Examiner. Since joining SGA Design Group, his primary role has been on SGA’s Kohl’s client team. Michael uses his LEED expertise working closely with Kohl’s on their sustainability efforts, as well as helping guide SGA‘s sustainability goals. In 2009, Michael spoke about USGBC’s LEED for Retail rating system at the Sustainable Arkansas Green Conference. In 2010, he had an article published in Commercial Construction Magazine entitled “7 ways retailers can go green with little effort and money”. Michael recently completed a review of the IgCC to verify the impacts to one of SGA’s clients. Michael is active with his local AIA chapter and is currently serving on AIA Eastern Oklahoma’s Board of Directors as Secretary and has previously co-chaired the Chapter’s Committee on the Environment. Ed Shriver Jr., FAIA is a founding member and principal of Strada, and architectural, urban design, interiors and landscape design firm headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa. Founded in 2000 by four established and diverse architects, Strada has become the trusted design advisor to cities, towns, colleges, universities, corporations and developers of mixed-use projects and public spaces. Mr. Shriver’s work has focused on the development and execution of corporate and development strategies through architectural and urban design. He is the founder and past Chair of AIA’s National Retail and Entertainment Knowledge Community, a professional practice area within AIA dedicated to fostering the creation, discussion, and dissemination of knowledge about the retail and entertainment environments. He is also past Private Member Alliance Co-Chair for the Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware Chapter of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
