Safe Public Spaces: Interview with Susan Oldroyd

It's almost time for the 2014 AIA AAJ Conference! I'm looking forward to attending the event and learning more about the capabilities of good social design.  In preparation for the event, I have interviewed Susan Oldroyd, presenter of the session Safe Public Spaces: Encouraging Positive Social Behaviors Through Design.

Could you tell me a little about yourself, experiences, and interests?

I am a sole proprieter with my own firm focused on public safety design.

Do you have any current projects focused on public safety design?

San Francisco International Airport Fire Station 3 and Security Checkpoint, San Francisco CA

 

What experience lead you to choose safe public spaces for a conference topic? 

I have experience doing courthouses and other public safety design.  My interest came from experience as a project manager for State of California design standards. 

 

How would you define “safe public spaces”?

What characteristics that we encounter everyday make a public space “unsafe”?  What are some examples / locations of these types of spaces?

The session will include lots of examples and 5 strategies for safe public spaces, emerging topic.  The metrics haven’t been well defined, but this will be a good topic for discussion [at the conference].

 

Do you think that unsafe public spaces target particularly vulnerable social groups? Or would you say that they effect everyone equally?

What types of positive social behaviors could be encouraged through good design?

avoidance of conflict, positive behavior would be getting pedestrians quickly and safely to destination

 

What resources could you recommend for further researching this topic?

  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (passive design to control behavior in architectural spaces)

 

Is there anything you would recommend going to see/eat/do while in St. Louis (for the conference attendees)?
 St. Louis is known for their barbeque!
