Vishaan Chakrabarti will be participating in a panel discussion at the COD Spring Conference "Big Cties, Big Ideas" in New York. His Op-Ed in The New York Times on April 16th is still garnering comments: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/17/opinion/americas-urban-future.html?smid=pl-share&_r=0

Certain to be discussed among the panel are the policies New York is presently generating to increase its urban density, infrastructure and amenities. As he states: "With millions of Americans already gravitating toward cities, the real question is what it means for our collective future, and how we respond."

What questions would you pose to Mr. Chakrabarti, if you had the opportunity?

I would be curious what his observations are about smaller cities, and towns.  Does he see them differently than large metropolitan areas.

From the article: "Is it any wonder that in bustling, successful American cities, our subways remain old, our public housing dilapidated and our schools subpar?" And yet, the cities are apparently growing, young people and their parents moving there in droves? Why? Rather than rehashing the tired (and generally disingenuously selfish) arguments about taxation and government spending, we should be trying to learn what it is that is driving the current in-migration. Band wagon federal programs produced Pruitt Igoe. Another uncritical urban stampede will do the same. My question for Mr. Chakrabarti: How do you make affordable housing when the land is so expensive? How do you make sustainable (and I don't mean green) affordable housing in a desirable venue?
