Germanna Community College Science & Engineering Building / Information Commons received a Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design during the 2012 AIA DC Chapter Design Awards Program.

The Washington Chapter/AIA Awards Program recognizes excellence in the categories of architecture, interior architecture and historic resources. The program not only demonstrates to the public the value of good design, but also illustrates the wide variety of services performed by architects. The Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design is awarded to a firm who demonstrates their ability to create a beautiful project that is compatible with sustainable design, and is at the discretion of the President to determine how many, if any, citations will be awarded each year.

The 50,000 SF sustainability-driven Science & Engineering Building / Information Commons for Germanna Community College's Fredericksburg Area Campus provides classrooms and laboratories for chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering, and also houses a central Information Commons for students and faculty. Designed to USGBC's LEED Silver Certification, renewable energy elements such as a green roof, smart energy management controls, and displays on view in the glass-faced mechanical room allow for education both in and out of the classroom.
