As the US economy slowly recovers, we need to come together as architects, planners, owners and designers to understand the norms emerging after the recession. Furthermore, we must continue our commitment to developing innovative ways to advance facilities in which teaching and learning occurs.

We are beginning the second decade of this exciting new century, and are faced with the reality of accelerated schedules, shrinking budgets and funding cuts. Despite these challenges, our nation will spend hundreds of billions of dollars to replace, renovate or build thousands of education facilities over the next 10 to 20 years. Our new reality still demands that we continue to program, plan, design, and build thoughtful and engaging learning environments that serve students, teachers and the community alike. This is true for K‐12 schools, early learning, post-secondary education, corporate and community learning centers.

This year, we will continue to elevate the level of discourse about design, environmental responsibility, teaching and learning, context, and the development of community partnerships in support of improving the country’s learning environments. Our dialogue will include internationally recognized thought leaders from around the nation together with architects and allied professionals to explore the relationship between our new economic reality, design and the impact on the spaces that we create to support teaching and learning.
