On Technology

From The AIA Center for Integrated Practice

Throughout 2011 CIP features resources from a range of topics that address how architects and members of the AEC industry tackle the issues and opportunities facing practice today. "On Technology" was the featured subject in June 2011.

On Technology: Introductory Article and Podcast

What are BIM, CIP, IPD and TAP? Why do they matter to design and our profession? How can I learn more about them?
Dr. Calvin Kam PhD, AIA, PE, LEED AP

Serving on the advisory groups of AIA Center for Integrated Practice (CIP) and AIA Technology for Integrated Practice (TAP), we are passionate in facilitating organic dialogues and explorations around these questions. We see that TAP is more than just a Building Information Model (BIM); while we will never equate CIP with merely just the signing of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract document.

Building Information Modeling empowers design. It allows architects to be more efficient, better master architect and collaborator, while enabling us to simulate and optimize designs in the virtual environment. The success or failure of BIM depends on our ability to align the technologies with their corresponding design strategies, business cases, collaborative processes and integrated practice.

Whether we are working on Design-Bid-Build contract or an Integrated Form of Agreement such as the AIA Integrated Project Delivery contract, there are always opportunities to leverage the power of technologies to achieve better collaboration. In seven years of the AIA BIM Awards, architects, engineers, builders, owners, and students have demonstrated the values of BIM in realizing complex design forms, preserving historic landmark, greening the environment, eliminating delays and errors, enhancing building performance while changing public owner requirements and design practice around the world.

We invite you to not only stay tuned in the dialogues from our fellow professionals, but also actively contribute to different TAP and CIP activities as listed on the AIA KnowledgeNet.

The Voice of CIP

Listen to the From CIP: On Technology Podcast on the AIA Pod Net and hear Calvin Kam and Tony Rinella engage in a dialog that highlights many valuable resources related to BIM, Web based technology, and interoperability, all of which impact the architecture profession and the future of design and practice.
