I am nominating the Paolo Soleri Amphitheater (1966-1969) to the National Register of Historic Places.  This will be a difficult task as the theater is on sovereign Indian land at he Santa Fe Indian School.  Furthermore, it fits no easily recognized stylistic category. The remarkable building is distinguished not only as a rare Soleri commission but as the first building designed and built specifically for contemporary Indigenous drama.  I am working with the New Mexico State Office of Historic Preservation and have the gracious support and advice of Chester Liebs, past chairman of the Columbia University preservation program.  Michael Tomlan of Cornell has also offered his thoughts.  Cosanti's new President, Jeff Stein, has been encouraging the effort.

I welcome any contributions - information on the theater's history and strategies for success from AIA members.  (I'm neither an experienced preservationist nor formally an historian).
