Over 90% of existing housing in the United States is not accessible and the demand for accessible housing is rapidly increasing as our population ages. Every year millions of Americans adjust to the difficult challenge of living with physical limitations. Living in a conventionally designed house impedes even the simplest daily living functions, compounds their hardship and is hazardous. This workshop will go beyond basic ADA standards and focus on applying the principals of Universal Design in private residences. Participants will learn the history of the Universal Design movement, compare examples of current accessible building codes regulations, and examine coming trends. We will examine the growing Aging-In-Place market and how architects can effectively provide services to the senior community. The presentation will include case studies of accessible residential projects such as; no-step entries, accessible kitchens and safe bathrooms. Participants will receive a list of Universal Design resources.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about the history of accessible residential building codes, and how to improve occupant safety.
- Learn about current codes and how to advocate for changes in regulations at the local municipal level.

Report AIA Continuing Education
Attendees will earn 1 HSW CEH. At the end of the webinar, a link to a survey will be provided. All attendees at each site submit one form: 1) page one: webinar survey and 2) page two: CES report form. The survey must be completed within 24 hours of the webinar. AIA members and IDP record holders will have their credit recorded within 48 hours of the webinar. All attendees will be prompted to download a certificate of completion at the end of the survey.

Laura Montllor, AIA is an architect and age-in-place expert with more than 25 years of experience in private practice in New York. She is a long time advocate of inclusive design and creating spaces that are functional for all users. Laura is the Director of HomeFreeHome.org, an all-volunteer group of architects who design accessible homes, which give families lives with greater freedom and dignity. Named one of the “Most Influential Women on Long Island” in 2009 by the Long Island Press, her work appears in Exceptional Parent Magazine, Newsday, HGTV, and House Beautiful. She has served the AIA at the national level for the Small Project Practitioners Knowledge Community and authored articles for AIArchitect. Andrew Robinson, AIA, LEED AP, CAPS has been practicing architecture as a principal since 1985. Since his graduation from the Yale School of Architecture, he has been active in his community. He has chaired the Woodbridge, CT Plan & Zoning Commission and presently Chairs the Architectural Review Board. He is a member of the board of the Orange Economic Develop Commission.
