Susan,

In December 2008, the AIA Board of Directors merged the RUDC portfolio with the AIA Center for Communities by Design. RUDC representation continues through the Board Advocacy Committee to provide even closer alignment of the Committee's activities with the overall strategic objectives of the Institute. You can contact Joel Mills, the director of the AIA Center for Communities by Design at joelmills@aia.org.

I will also note that when AIA KnowledgeNet launched in July 2010 the RUDC community was reactivated  (online only) to allow the RUDC members to take advantage of this nationwide discussion and resource library.

As Kathleen said, there is no National RUDKC. As part of the budget cuts years ago, it got dissolved and has been bounced within the Institute since. However, there is a movement to get it restarted. Past-President Manus, some past National RUDKC members, some key urban design leaders within the Institute, and AIA Chicago's RUDKC have been leading the charge to get it restarted. I have had multiple discussions with National and it is in the works.

Susan, Is there any is particular you are looking for with regards to the National RUDKC?

I too have heard there is a move afoot to re-establish the RUDC KC.

In the meantime the R/UDAT and S/DAT programs seem to be the
standard bearers for all related current activities.

I have heard from many committee members that they would like to have
the committee function again. Its removal from the roles of KCs
was done so quietly that it took some time to notice its disappearance.

In this, "the century of the city", the value of the RUDC could not be greater.

I could not concur more with Lance's comments.  I have no idea why the RUDC/KC was removed unless the discussion offended somebody.  Recent violent protests abroad undescore the need for adherence to free speech as a central tenet of our society.  Let's see the discussion forum resume, asap.

Message:
The RUDC has been revived and the new chair will be posting here shortly. But, Gary, to your question - here is a copy of the email that was sent to all RUDC members in January 2009.
---

Dear Colleagues:

The AIA Board of Directors approved the 2009 national component operating plan and budget earlier this month. The plan and budget address the economic reality of anticipated lower revenue next year. But, instead of taking the easier path of cutting budgets and programs equally, with strategic guidance from the AIA Board, the Executive Management team thoroughly examined which AIA national component programs, policies, and initiatives should be eliminated and which should grow.

As a result, the 2009 operating plan and budget continues to emphasize AIA strategic priorities-sustainability, integrated project delivery, diversity, emerging professionals, and our web strategy, and maintains strength in programs you value highly-advocacy, contract documents, membership and membership communications, and the annual AIA convention.

However, there are organizational changes in 2009 that directly affect the Regional and Urban Design Committee (RUDC). Earlier this month, I spoke directly with chair Soren Simonsen, AIA, AICP, LEED AP, to explain the changes and the rationale and he expressed enthusiasm that the work of the RUDC will continue to help strengthen the Institute's voice on community design issues. Beginning in January, the RUDC portfolio will merge with the AIA Center for Communities by Design and representation will continue through the Board Advocacy Committee to provide even closer alignment of the Committee's activities with the overall strategic objectives of the Institute. The staff of the Center for Communities by Design will reach out to you in the next few weeks to ensure all RUDC materials and web resources are updated and the 2009 RUDC plans get underway, including the Spring Roundtable, "Redefining the Architect's Role: Architects as Agents for Social Change" and the 2009 AIA Convention RUDC luncheon. Starting in January, you'll be able to maintain communication with your RUDC colleagues through the Center for Communities by Design listserv.

In another example of how the 2009 AIA operating plan effectively utilizes resources, the Educator/Practitioners Network, Continuing Education Quality Assurance Panel, and Convention Continuing Education Advisory Committee merge to form a new Board Education Committee charged with creating an Institute-wide education strategy. These and other changes place greater emphasis on adding value for membership in the AIA. The global economic downturn is having an impact on your professional organization and the Board and Executive Management responded in a proactive manner. You can continue to rely on the AIA to provide the tools and resources you need to support your practice and career. You can expect new and innovative ways to engage with other AIA members and the profession in 2009. You can anticipate an AIA that is strong and ever-more relevant to your professional life. A toast to a better 2009 for us all!

Sincerely

Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA

I couldn't agree more, Lance. AIA Denver's UDC has been continually active for many years, much to the chagrin of parts of the political establishment. We are actually trying to get a R/DAT going to study the rebuilding of I-70 where it penetrates the urban fabric of Denver. It should never have been put there in the first place.

Message:
I am pleased to announce that the Regional and Urban Design Committee (RUDC) has
now officially been re-established. After its termination in 2009, I and many other people
have been working hard to convince the Board the importance of the RUDC and the
vital role planning and urban design have on the built environment.

The Committee is now hard at work on restoring the foundations of the organization
to provide a powerful resource to those members who work, or have an interest, in
planning and urban design. We are working on reaching out to the local chapters'
RUDCs to establish a strong connection to promote and foster their great work and
leadership. We will be promoting the work of our members through our national design
awards, convention presentations, and the RUDC website. We are striving to be a
conduit for existing AIA National resource; R/UDAT, SDAT, Communities by Design,
Livable Communities, and the other Knowledge Communities.

The RUDC's endeavor is to be an advocate for our communities and environment. Our
goal is to make AIA a key partner with our collateral organizations and university to be
engaged in current practice and theory. Please be patient with us as we have a lot of
work ahead of us. For those of us involved and concerned about the built environment
we once again have a voice within the Institute, the Regional and Urban Design
Knowledge Community.

This is great news. I wonder why the committee's demise and efforts to revive it were such a secret?
Anyway, it is back and just in time! With the economy on the mend and more people focused on urbanized areas and traditional town centers, the AIA has an opportunity to articulate an alternative to paving everything in sight with 8 lane expressways. What qualifies highway engineers to design cities, anyway? I just hope its not too late to alter the course of what passes for urban design these days.

In order to justify the existence of the committee, I think we need to bring a serious discussion to the table, not just opinion alone, valuable as that can be.  A "regional and urban" design committee really needs to get beyond personal experience on either side of the question, suburban vs. urban, and divorce the discussion from architecture per se.  Any building is far less complex in its parts than a city, and of interest to us archies far more than to lay folk - unless it happens to be THEIR building.  If we can encourage people to think of the city as THEIR city, their most significant vehicle and resource for a good life, we will have gone a long way to creating the atmosphere for better communication between ourselves and the laity.

It looks like there is work to do to convince ourselves first.

So does this explain how the 'Community by Design' page went from "full of broken links" to "nonextistent"?

Has that group since been re-absorbed by the RUDC?

Thomas,

The AIA website has gone through several changes in the past few years. Is this the webpage you are referring to? http://www.aia.org/about/initiatives/AIAS075265

The RUDC homepage is now on AIA KnowledgeNet:
http://network.aia.org/RegionalandUrbanDesignCommittee/Home/

You can always report broken links or request information from AIA via email or by calling.

Message:
While the RUDC is reconstituting , we, the current Advisory Group of RUDC will rely heavily on local Regional and Urban Design Committees to provide issues and solutions that they are confronted with on the local level as they may be relevant to others.

Many cities face similar issues. Very broadly, we can biforcate urban issues in the US between cities that shrink ("Legacy Cities") and cities that grow ("Sunbelt" cities), each side facing somewhat different problems. Some systemic issues, though, confront both sides of this divide: Examples are climate adaptation, increased resilience to weather events, economic and environmental sustainability or urban transportation to name but a few of the issues requiring large scale "system thinking", a topic the current Advisory Group would like to promote.

While we will be trying to make the RUDC website more user friendly (and National is hopefully trying the same for the entire AIA web experience), we hope that individuals and chapters begin to post here or on the blogs about any urban and regional issues you are tackling either in your firms, as advocates or as part of your local chapter.

Just to do what I ask for here, I post below a link to a recent blog of mine facing the problem of large scale industrial site reclamation (example: Baltimore).
