There have been several appeals to action on this forum. I wanted to share with all those interested in impacting state legislative affairs, a resource group in the AIA.

The State Government Network (SGN) was established in 1991 to give state components resources and materials necessary to advocate effectively within state government and to encourage communication between components. SGN is made up of 150 Chapter presidents, legislative affairs chairs, contract lobbyists, AIA members and chapter staff - designated by their respective state chapters - who have an interest in government advocacy.

Who's my rep? See the roster: http://www.aia.org/advocacy/state/AIAB090088 (sign-in required)

Interested members need to contact their component to indicate their interest, then be approved by the executive and the component.  Members who are active in government affairs work are the most likely to be approved.

Who Comprises the SGN and How Are They Appointed?

  • Membership consists of:
    • One Representative
    • One Alternate
    • The State CACE Representative
    • One observer, if requested
  • SGN representatives are appointed or re-appointed every year.  The component and component executive decide who to appoint and the appointment process.  Many SGN members are members for several years/terms.  As such there is much continuity from year to year.
  • SGN representatives may be AIA members interested in government advocacy or lobbyists hired by the state component.  They are typically the people who run or participate in state legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the component.
