If you want to start a petition drive about this issue, I might suggest to go to Change.org which is a website where you can create and post petitions. It appears to be rather effective.

A powerful resource for any protest is Edmund Morris's April 21 New York Times essay, "Sacking a Palace of Culture."  See link below:

The New York Public Library has been called the highest achievement of Beaux-Arts architecture- France's examples included. Granted it's a living building, but surely it deserves more careful handling.
