  • 1.  REC looking for ideas for DC Convention presentations/CE session

This message has been cross posted to the following Discussion Forums: Regional and Urban Design Committee and Retail and Entertainment .

REC is looking for topics for presentations, workshops or other continuing education opportunities for next years AIA National Convention in DC.  What opportunities are there in the DC area for sessions that would help you in your practice or expand your horizons as professionals?  If you have projects, or know of work that exemplifies good retail or entertainment architecture, of want to see a particular topic explored, let's hear about it.

The REC was formed to promote dialogue around best practices in retail and entertainment design, promote the contribution that retail and entertainment architecture make to livable communities, and to expand the discussion about sustainability in retail and entertainment architecture.  If you have a thought, idea or proposal, or if you're interested in joining a committee to develop our presentations, this is your opportunity to get involved.

All thoughts are welcome, and you can help us make next years convention a great venue for exploration of issues that directly affect our practices.

    Thanks

how about addressing safety in the retail environment?  I'm an architect with a safety and forensic practice who sees many cases a year where patron injuries are related to design and operational factors.

Interesting idea.  Have you considered submitting a proposal for a session yourself?  To the best of my knowledge, and I've done several presentations myself as well as sitting on the committee that reviews proposals for convention for the last three years, nothing like this has been proposed.

I'd be glad to help you (or anyone else who's considering submitting a presentation proposal) to get through the submission process.  It's not very difficult, but does take a day or twos worth of time.  The hard part just now is that submissions are due by July 1st for the DC convention.  There's still time, just not a lot.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help.

Having spend so much time in DC, I think that REC has a unique opportunity to do a retrospective on Bethesda Row since it is celebrating their 18th year in 2012.  This project and and it's sister, Santana Row explored a number of radical concepts at the time.  I have spend time, and money, in both places and as a former Imagineer was most intrigued in it's Placemaking in an urban development concept.  As Midge always cautioned us when we started REC, "did it work?"

To that end we could look at the original design, development concepts and expectations were?  How the architects and developers expected the project to work, what actually happened, and identify lessons learned, both positive and negative, and how the experience of Bethesda Row can give us both inspiration and knowledge for future efforts to use retail and entertainment as key components in a revitalization effort based on urban infill, transit oriented development, and sustainability through reuse.

    Just a thought, Ed........

    I like this idea Michael.

I'd be interested in hearing what others in the REC and R/UD communities think.  Is this an session you'd be interested in attending?  What would you hope/expect to get out of it?  How would you 'build' on this?

Sound off.  It's your knowledge community too.
